Dennis Burke and Jim Torney originally joined forces at IBM. After working together for many years, they decided to strike out on their own to develop more productive partnerships with their customers. In 1994, they opened the doors of Essextec— a company dedicated to providing business solutions built on infrastructure and data management. More than two decades later, our leadership team is still focused on providing technology-based solutions to our clients while maintaining strong, customer-focused relationships.
CEO and Co-Founder
Dennis co-founded Essex Technology Group, Inc. (Essextec) in 1994. With over 30 years of experience in providing strategic IT and business solutions, Dennis oversees Essextec’s services business, including the IBM Collaboration Office partnership as well as our relationship with IBM Global Financing. He also manages our marketing and telemarketing initiatives, along with the Essextec Innovation Center.
Prior to co-founding Essextec, Dennis held various sales and management positions in the computer industry, among them 15 years at IBM. An avid sports fan and ski buff, Dennis enjoys traveling with his wife and two sons.
President and Co-Founder
Jim Torney co-founded Essex Technology Group, Inc. (Essextec) in 1994. He currently oversees and helps to set the direction for the company. Jim works closely with IBM executives to ensure that Essextec is aligned with IBM's market strategy and has served on several IBM Advisory Councils over the past twenty years. He is currently a member of both the IBM North American and Global Business Partner Advisory Councils which are comprised of senior leaders from Business Partner firms in North America, Latin America, and Europe.
Under his leadership, Essextec has invested in and capitalized on the industry trends of cognitive computing, hybrid cloud, and cybersecurity. Jim held various sales and management positions in the computer industry, among them 11 years at IBM.
When not sitting at the helm of Essextec, Jim enjoys golf and spending time with his close-knit family. Jim is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.
Vice President, Technology Solutions & Services
Bill, a 30+ year technology industry veteran, is one of the original employees of Essextec, joining the company in 1995 to build and lead a technical support staff. A driving force behind our technology solution developments, Bill is responsible for ensuring that we stay in the forefront of the industry by researching and developing leading-edge solutions for new technology partnerships and services delivery.
When Bill is not researching the latest technologies, he enjoys spending time with his family and watching classic movies.
Senior Vice President/CTO
Michael is Essextec’s foremost Enterprise Architect and has led many of our most sophisticated engagements. A long time veteran of the IT industry, Michael is able to successfully bring together experiences that span over two decades of technology and apply them to recurring problems that today's large organizations face. He has been a pioneer in the area of Enterprise Extranets and Intranets and Distributed Services and Application Platforms. His innovative solutions merge a thorough understanding of strategic business priorities across and along lines of business, with the targeted, yet pragmatic application of technology and best practices.
Michael’s responsibilities have given him deep exposure to various areas of technology. These have included the optimization of service-oriented architectures, high performance computing for financial markets, enterprise collaboration and messaging systems for global organizations. He acts as a trusted advisor to many clients during short and long term engagements.
Michael holds a B.S. degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from Mercy College and various industry certifications.
Director, Sales Support
Kathy oversees Essextec’s contractual relationships with IBM, Arrow Electronics, state and local governments, a number of independent software vendors, and other customer groups; she also manages the firm’s participation in IBM and Arrow partner programs and initiatives. Kathy is a member of our Compensation Committee and coordinates training for the sales team.
When Kathy and her husband aren't traveling the globe, she's involved in a variety of family and community activities.
VP Solutions Architecture
Slava Frid is Essextec's in-house Digital Engagement expert. He works closely with our product, sales and business development teams, as well as Essextec partners, including IBM, to develop solutions and offerings for all of Essextec business practices. Along with a dedicated team of Essextec consultants, he is devoted to designing and delivering solutions for our customers.
For the last 10 years Slava has focused in Digital Engagement, participating in Java standards processes and presenting at multiple conferences all over United States. In his earlier career Slava was active in the start-up world and brings his start-up experience to solve complex problems for our clients.
Slava is a graduate of the Management & Technology program of the University of Pennsylvania and holds Bachelor of Science degrees from the Wharton School and School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Evan H. Herbst

Senior Vice President
Evan is Senior Vice President, Business Development and Co-COO of the Software and Consulting Services Division. He has responsibility and oversight for channels and alliances, strategy, recruiting, and divisional finance. Additionally, Evan is currently building and leading the cognitive computing practice around IBM Watson, leveraging Essextec's Digital Engagement and Big Data Analytics capabilities.
Previously, Evan was Senior Vice President and Co-COO at Gemini Systems, a leading IBM Software solution provider and consulting firm. Prior to re-joining Gemini Systems in 2002, Evan was the Chief Technology Officer of ip*network, Inc., the premier vendor of web-based enterprise software and solutions for managing intellectual property and intellectual property licensing agreements. He has also served as a co-founder and partner in BedRock Ventures, a firm providing consulting and capital-raising services to startup and turnaround businesses; the Founder and CEO of StorageOne Media, a software firm for entertainment companies; and as a co-founder and President of Exa Media, a digital services firm for entertainment companies. Evan began his career as a consultant with Gemini Systems.
He holds a Bachelor's degree in Systems Science and Engineering, with a minor in Computer Science, from the University of Pennsylvania. Evan also holds three US Patents for delivering content to mobile devices.

Simon founded Gemini Systems in 1987 to provide innovative and leading edge solutions to complex business problems. Post-acquisiton, Simon guides Essextec’s professional services, ensuring our clients have the most exceptional experience possible.
For more than 20 years, Simon has served many of the largest and best companies and organizations in different industries, including financial services companies, financial markets, exchanges, regulatory organizations, industrial manufacturers, life sciences, governments, media, entertainment, and not-for-profit organizations.
Simon received the 2006 Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business Award. Simon studied Electrical and Computer Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Senior Vice President, Sales and Professional Services
David is responsible for managing many of Essextec’s key customer relationships and for coordination between the sales, sales engineering, finance and the professional services organizations within Essextec. David also runs sales engineering, sales operations, and key portions of our partner and vendor programs.
David received a B.S. in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from Cornell University and an M.B.A. in Finance and Investments from Bernard M. Baruch College, City University of New York.
Vice President, Sales
Tom leads Essextec’s account management team to ensure we are providing the best solutions possible for our clients. With over 20 years in the IT industry, Tom has in-depth knowledge of the latest trends and best-in-class solutions to effectively meet customer needs. His leadership of the account management team focuses on getting to know how our customers work to help them move their businesses forward.
Originally from Rochester, New York, Tom enjoys outdoor activities, including boating and hiking, volunteering with local community organizations, and spending time with family and friends.

Claire is an experienced, meticulous project manager, and she has led team after team of Essextec developers in achieving system-development excellence.
Claire graduated from Clarkson University with a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. She began her career with Bechtel Power Corporation in the Plant Facilities Automated Engineering Group.
